My take on the Republican Convention

I’m not sending links today, well maybe just one, but I wanted to share my thoughts on the convention. I was impressed with so many of the speakers and it was to my surprise, because I did not expect to be.

Standing out in my mind are Chris Christie, Condoleezza Rice, Marco Rubio, CLINT EASTWOOD, and of course Mitt Romney. I liked Ann Romney speech, it was well delivered, but who expected anything else. I knew she would do it well.Of course, I knew the others would be good also but some were outstanding.

I thought “why in the world would they go to Hollywood and have Clint Eastwood?” Well, listening to all the Democratic voices tells me he really threw them for a loop. He MADE FUN OF MR. WONDERFUL! Oh the whining, the wondering if he is senile, talking to a chair? It was so great to have someone whom the world really feels good about come out and in a comedic way tell them THE EMPEROR HAS NO CLOTHES. The chair symbolized the empty suit, the “nothing there” of our current President. So they are busy trashing Eastwood today. I think he doesn’t care. I’m grateful to him for his being there.

And Marco Rubio, what a guy. He reminded me of one of my grandsons. He gave a great speech, I had never watched a speech by him before; I liked it. The talking heads are saying, ‘Well it was the same old thing.” Hmm…. guess that is why he is so well liked particularly in his state. He has a great story to tell and he firmly believes in America. He has lived the American dream. Good for him.

The same is true of Condoleezza Rice. True she had educated parents but she came from Birmingham and if you are as old as I, you remember what happened there. When she was a young child she had a friend murdered in a church bombing there. She too has lived the American dream and she wants it for the rest of the children in our country.

Chris Christie is the stem winder. I had never really watched all of one of his speeches either. I was impressed. I certainly don’t believe in all his positions but he didn’t talk about those. He talked about how to get the economy back on track, get out from under the crushing debt, and he did it while making me think he actually grew up in a fundamentalist church. He’s a preacher and he was preaching what I wanted to hear. I know, he is from New Jersey but if he didn’t have that accent I wouldn’t believe it.

I am not going to comment on the Romney speeches except to say I thought both of them were great. Mr. Romney finally showed some real action in speaking and that was a good thing. I believe he will make a good president.

One Response to My take on the Republican Convention

  1. Judy Reed says:

Ruth did you create that anti-spam? Clever (to keep your siblings out?)
Susana Martinez is impressive! Add her to the list.
There are so many articles pro and con about the candidates; there are so many articles about who is telling the truth or not; there are so many blogs; there is a pile of “experts”. Therefore, I puposefully ignore everything written, unless I am looking for information and seek out a personality or a story to investigate. The information deluge can be compared to the difference between standing under a cloudburst and going to the tap for a drink of water. I say all of that to say this:
Perhaps if I had read more, I wouldn’t have been so surprised. I was pleasantly surprised with the Republican Convention. I did not hear the old worn out stories declaring our “righteousness” and patriotism, our “inclusion,” and our tie to Ronald Reagan. I SAW the new generation of Republicans who ARE included- the hispanics of different backgrounds, the blacks, the Indian, the multi-cultural diversion- and I heard them, first-hand tell their stories. I saw in their eyes their passion for the good old U.S.A. and its traditional work ethic that I haven’t seen in years. I saw a reason to hope that the U.S.A. has a future as a God-honoring and capitalistic country. I was happy to see that the old Republicans, my age and older, are stepping aside, and we have a new generation we can trust with holding the line. I think they will do a better job. Hats off to those young guns!
