Here is a big fraud case and it isn’t even about President Obama. We all know there is waste in any government agency, and in particular the Corps of Engineers. They do a lot of good, but when a bureaucracy is established we always get a lot of waste and in this case fraud. I guess I should use the journalistic word “alleged.”
Fraud in Corps of Engineers contracting charged

Strip away the shell companies and complex wire transfers, and what federal prosecutors on Tuesday called “one of the most brazen corruption schemes in the history of federal contracting” was really quite simple. First, officials at the Army Corps of Engineers and technology company representatives got together and agreed to file inflated invoices for federal contracting services, prosecutors said. Then they bought millions of dollars worth of BMWs, Rolex and Cartier watches, flat-screen televisions, first-class airline tickets and investment properties across the globe. Until they were arrested Tuesday, authorities said, they had their sights on another contract, one worth $780 million. Four men — two program managers at the corps, a son of one of them and the director of contracts at a Dulles technology firm — were indicted on corruption-related charges that were made public Tuesday.

Health executive lobbied in Washington to advance Medicare fraud scheme

Miami health-care executive Larry Duran orchestrated one of the largest Medicare frauds in U.S. history, submitting more than $205 million in phony claims and landing a record-breaking 50-year prison sentence for his crimes.
But another piece of Duran’s scheme also caught the eye of prosecutors. They say he extended his fraud by his lobbying efforts, all aimed at getting official Washington to make it easier for mental health centers like his to make money.
An advocacy group he helped set up, called the National Association for Behavioral Health, spent more than $750,000 on lobbying efforts over the past five years, including staging “fly-ins” on Capitol Hill and providing advice to its members on how to get around Medicare denials, according to the Justice Department. The group also held fundraisers for key lawmakers such as Sen. Mary Landrieu (D-La.) and former congressmanKendrick Meek (D-Fla.), records show.

The Obama administration’s Department of Energy was poised last summer to give Solyndra a second major taxpayer loan of $469 million, even as the company’s financial situation was growing more dire.
The Energy Department was actively pushing to provide the second loan guarantee to the troubled solar-panel manufacturer in April and May 2010, when Solyndra’s auditors warned the company was in danger of closing due to its rapidly mounting debts and expenses, according to complete e-mails just released by a House committee investigating the original loan.
For such “smart people” the people who are arranged around this scandal are really, really economically illiterate.
